Saturday 9 November 2024 will mark the hundredth anniversary of the unveiling of the War Memorial. To commemorate the occasion Carnforth Town Council is planning a number of events over the weekend of 8 to 10 November, the highlight being a re-enactment of the original unveiling ceremony on Saturday, 9 November.
Carnforth’s Memorial incorporates the figure of a World War One soldier, a “Tommy”, but uniquely this figure is one of six “Band of Brothers” created by celebrated sculptor, Percy Bentham.
As part of the Carnforth commemorative event contact has been made with the five other communities which have copies of Percy Bentham’s Tommy figure atop their war memorials. Arrangement has been made with these communities to exchange wreaths to be laid at all of our respective Remembrance Day services this month.
The five other communities are Audenshaw (Greater Manchester), Ballywalter (Northern Ireland), Duckinfield (Greater Manchester), Haydon Bridge (Northumberland) and Trowbridge (Wiltshire).
Carnforth’s Memorial was the last to be unveiled with Audenshaw’s the first (1920), followed by Haydon Bridge and Trowbridge (1921) and Ballywalter and Duckinfield (1922).
We are grateful to Butterworth’s Cleaning Services for taking care of our ‘Tommy’ recently. He is now all spruced up ahead of the Big Day!
