What do Council’s do?

Local government in the Lancashire is made up of three tiers:

  • Lancashire County Council
  • Lancaster City Council
  • Parish/Town Councils

What does Lancashire County Council do?

Lancashire County Council is responsible for services across the whole of a county, like:

  • education
  • transport
  • planning
  • fire and public safety
  • social care
  • libraries
  • waste management
  • trading standards

What does Lancaster City Council do?

Lancaster City Council is responsible for making important decisions in the Lancaster District.  The City Council is responsible for:

  • rubbish collection and recyling
  • street cleansing
  • Council Tax and Housing Benefit
  • housing and housing standards
  • planning applications
  • parking enforcement
  • licensing
  • ecomonic development and tourism
  • public realm
  • parks and leisure facilities

What does Parish and Town Council’s do?

These operate at a the lowest level of local government.  They are closest to their communities and act as advocates on issues that are important to residents as well as functions and services such as:

  • allotments
  • public clocks
  • bus shelters
  • toilets
  • community centres
  • play areas and play equipment
  • public realm and some grounds maintenance
  • grants to help local organisations
  • consultation on neighbourhood planning
